Heirloom and Open Pollenated Brassicas

Broccoli de Cico: 49 days. Italian variety with one 3"-4" main head, then lots of side shoots throughout the season.
Broccoli, Green Goliath: 74 days. Standard large head variety with 4"-8" head. Some side shoots may grow after harvest of main head.
Cauliflower: 70 days. Fall variety. Self-blanching to form white, good size heads.
Brussels Sprouts: 90 days. Good variety for fall and winter prodction in South, summer production in other parts of US. Tasty, tender heads.

Greens

Arugula/Roquette:  Arugula

Arugula/Roquette, Sylvetta: 45 days. Known as "wild arugula" or Rucola Selvatica, this variety will self seed prolifically. Italian variety with much more finely cut leaves and stronger "arugula" flavor. Has yellow flowers instead of the white of standard arugula. Easy to grow. Harvest baby or full size. Cut and come again.
Mache/Corn Salad: 40 days. Gourmet salad greens. Vigorous. Long, oval, glossy green leaves with a tender, flowery, minty flavor. Cut and come again.


Asian Greens
Tatsoi:    Tatsoi
Leaves form a compact, thick rosette. Long harvest period. Mild taste for salads, stir-fry, etc. Thin to 6-8" apart for full-sized rosettes. Unique and easy to grow.
Yukina Savoy:    Yukina Savoy
Like a bigger Tatsoi.
Dark green, glossy leaves are more elongated than Tatsoi at the baby leaf stage. At full size the thick, savoyed leaves are held upright on pale green petioles. Space 12-18" apart and cut at the base for beautiful, full size bunches 10-12" tall. Heat and cold tolerant. Saute, steam, or stir-fry for healthy, delicious greens.
Komatsuna:    Komatsuna
Japanese greens for salad and braising mixes. Uniform, upright plants with slender, fleshy, rounded leaves. A delicious and beautiful variety with heat and disease tolerance.
Hon Tsai Tai:    Hon Tsai Tai
Chinese specialty. The young plants soon branch and project quantities of long, pencil-thin, red-purple, budded flower stems. Pleasing, mild mustard taste for use raw in salad or lightly cooked in soup. For multiple harvesting of tender stems, provide good fertility and irrigation.

EARLY VARIETIES

Bush Beefsteak:    Bush Beefsteak 62 days. Determinate.Compact, bushy plants yield an early abundance of big cluster of 6-8 oz. rich red, beefsteak-shaped fruit. Popular in the North and deep South because of its earliness, productivity and large fruit size.
Early Wonder:    Early Wonder
55 days. Determinate. Extra early maturing variety, full tomato flavor. abundant crops of round tomatoes with an average weight of 6 oz. on compact vines.
Moscovich:     Moskovich
60 days. Indeterminate. Medium size Russian Heirloom. Deep red fruit. Cold tolerant. Good early season variety. 4-6 oz.
Siletz:    Siletz
52 days. Determinate. Deep red, full-flavored slicing tomatoes are 10 -12 oz. Develped by Dr. James Baggett of Oregon State Univ., plants yield well even in cool weather. Good acid taste as excellent interior fruit quality in an early tomato.
Tigerella, Mr. Stripey:    Tigerella56 days. Indeterminate. Huge crops of red fruits with clearly defined yellow-orange stripes. 1-1/2 to 2 inch tomatoes have a rich, tangy flavor and are a beautiful novelty for adding whole or cutting into salads.


RED MEDIUM TO LARGE SIZE

Costoluto Fiorentino:     Costoluto Fiorentino
80 days. Indeterminate. This Italian heirloom variety from the Tuscany region produces loads of bright red tomatoes with terrific flavor. Tomatoes are typically about 8 ounces, but may be larger, with a smooth shape rather than the heavily ribbed shape typical of Costoluto Genovese. The flavor is high in sugar, but also high in acid, making for outstanding taste that's wonderful fresh or made into sauces.
Creole:     Creole79 days. Indeterminate. Developed in Louisiana for warm, humid climates, this variety yields plenty of smooth, medium-large round tomatoes. Good, sweet tomato flavor and plenty of juice, plus resistance to fusarium and blossom end rot make this one a Southern favorite.
Delicious:    Delicious 77 days. Indeterminate.Huge red fruit is smooth, nearly solid and often weighs more than 2 lbs. Excellent flavor, tiny seed cavities, and very little cracking. This is the variety that holds the world record for the largest tomato ever grown.
Homestead 24:     Homestead
80 days. Semi-indeterminate. Highly adaptable to climactic conditions, especially hot weather. Medium large, smooth red fruits. A mainstay of traditional gardens.
Peron:    Peron 68 days Indeterminate. The company that introduced this South American tomato claims it is so pest resistant that it never needs spraying. The 8 oz., good flavored red fruit are higher in Vitamin C than other tomatoes.
Rutgers:    Rutgers 75 days Determinate. Gardeners throughout the country are rediscovering this old-fashioned classic for its terrific flavor and productivity. This strain has some disease resistance, which ensures large crops of crack-free, bright red 6 to 8 oz. tomatoes with delicious old-time taste. For many years, this was a favorite for canning because of its abundance, juiciness and deep red color through and through. Developed in the 1920's, but just right for today's gardeners too.
Sioux:    Sioux 70 days Indeterminate. This heirloom variety was originally released in 1944 by the University of Nebraska and it is worth planting today because of its incredible flavor and reliably large harvests even in hot weather. Although this appears to be a average size (6 oz), unassuming red tomato, you just have to grow it to believe how good it is.... sweet yet tangy and full of those rich, complex flavors that make a delicious tomato memorable. Extraordinary taste in a round, red tomato.
Ugly:    Ugly 75 days. Indeterminate. This is the same as the tomatoes that have been appearing in supermarkets during the past several years for premium prices. Plants are indeterminate but stay a manageable size, and produce a heavy crop of 12-16 oz ribbed beefsteak-shaped fruit with wonderful, old-fashioned tomato flavor. Some of the best attributes after their great flavor are earliness, productivity, outstanding plant vigor and the ability to keep after harvest. Great for the home gardener!



PINK

Anna Russian:     Anna Russian70 days. Indeterminate. Heirloom seed handed down to an Oregon woman from several generations of her family, along with the story that it came from a Russian immigrant. Large, juicy pinkish red heart shaped tomatoes consistently weigh 1 lb. or just under. Flavor is superb. Small foliage and wispy vines are typical of oxheart-type tomatoes, but this one is distinctive for its size, earliness and juicy outstanding taste.
Arkansas Traveller:     Arkansas Traveller
80 days. Indeterminate. Southern heirloom known for its ability to produce in hot weather. Large yields of 6- 8 oz. flavorful pink tomatoes.
Brandywine:     Brandywine
80 days. Indeterminate. Traditional dark pink Brandywine on potato leaf plant. Medium size fruit. Not a heavy yielder here in the South. Great taste. Very strong vines need staking or caging.
Mortgage Lifter:     Mortgage Lifter
85 days. Indeterminate. Old pink variety very much in demand. Large, meaty fruit with few seeds.
Rose de Berne:    Rose de Berne 75 days. Indeterminate. A lovely name describes this very beautiful dark pink tomato that is shaped like a perfect globe, smooth and round with no blemishes. Fruits are medium size, 6 to 8 ozs., and boast flavor that is as impressive as its pretty appearance. These tomatoes have a thin skin, are juicy, and filled with sweet flavor that is wonderfully balanced with a bit of zing. Very productive plants yield a heavy crop. Swiss heirloom.


YELLOW/ORANGE/OTHER

Flamme, Orange Salad:      Flamme70 days. Indeterminate. Also known as Jaune Flamme, these beautiful orange salad tomatoes are very juicy and have a good, sweet flavor with fruity overtones. Tomatoes weigh 2-3 oz. and are a lovely persimmon orange color both inside and out. Extremely productive heirloom from France.
Garden Peach:     Garden Peach
75-85 days. Indeterminate. Abundant cluster of small yellow tomatoes with a pink blush. Skin is somewhat fuzzy resembling a peach and the flavor is sweet and fruitlike. Heirloom variety. Must be grown to be appreciated.
Green Zebra:     Green Zebra 80 days. Indeterminate. Unique and delicious salad tomato. 3 oz. green fruits ripen to amber-green with darker green stripes. Light green flesh is very flavorful, sweet yet zingy. This is a real taste treat!
Limmony:    Limmony 80 days. Indeterminate. These bright lemon-yellow beefsteak tomatoes have a fabulous tangy flavor that is actually sort of lemony, and very clean and crisp. This pronounced acid flavor sets it apart from many other yellow varieties, which are milder in taste. Fruit typically weigh 8 to 10 ozs., and are smooth and blemish-free, with solid, meaty interiors. Healthy plants are quite productive, resulting in great yields of these outstanding tomatoes. Heirloom from Russia.
Tangerine:     Tangerine Tomato
80-85 days. Indeterminate. Heirloom variety reintroduced in 1992. Deep yellow-orange, large beefsteak fruit is shaped like a tangerine. Texture is meaty and flavor is both sweet and rich, quite delicious. Heavy producer.


PURPLE

Black Krim:     Black Krim 75-80 days. Indeterminate. Dark brown-red tomatoes are large, 10-12 oz and very richly flavored and sweet. Color is darker in hot weather, and fruit set well in heat. Fruit is prone to cracking, but a very heavy producer. Heirloom from the Black Sea region of Russia.
Cherokee Purple:    Cherokee Purple
80-90 days. Indeterminate. Unusual pink-purple, almost brown color medium size fruit. Tolerant of hot weather with no cracking. Beautiful sliced in salads.
Eva Purple Ball    Eva's Purple Ball
85 days. Indeterminate. Perfectly round 3" fruit on regular leaf plant. Beautiful and tasty. Ripens from pink to purple. A real favorite of anyone who grows them.
Prudens Purple:    Prudens Purple
"Early Brandywine" 67 days. Indeterminate. Large, dark pink, flattened and smooth. Very mild flavor, a true Brandywine. May grow up to 1 lb. each.
Purple Calabash    Purple Calabash
85 days. Indeterminate. Medium size ruffled fruit look like little purple pumpkins. Heavy yields. Intense flavor, best when fully ripe.




PASTE TYPES

Old Ivory Egg:    Old Ivory Egg
80 days. Indeterminate. Medium size fruit with sweet, non-acidic flavor. Ripens to a lovely creamy yellow. Size and shape of a chicken egg. Very unusual for a paste tomato.
Orange Banana:     Orange Banana 75 days. Indeterminate. Beautiful orange paste tomatoes are 3-4 inches long with pointed ends. Plants are very vigorous, producing large yields of these sweetly-flavored fruit. They taste so good that they are perfect for salads as well as making into unusually colored sauces and salsas.
Polish Linguisa:    Polish Linguisa
73 days. Indeterminate. Huge, sausage-shaped fruit weighs 8 - 10 oz. Flavor is delicious enough to eat fresh as well as cook into sauces. Family heirloom from New York dates back to 1800's. Yields are heavy and hold up well on the vine.
Principe Borghese:    Principe Borghese
Italian plum. 60 days. Determinate. Heirloom Italian variety traditionally used for drying. Also good for sauces. Dark red, average about 1" long. Prolific bearer.
Roma VF:    Roma
78 days. Determinate. Standard Italian paste variety. Very meaty and flavorful.
San Marzano Redorta:    San Marzano
80 days. Indeterminate. Large plum tomato is an heirloom variety from Tuscany and named for a mountain Bergamo. Used for cooking, but flavorful enough to eat fresh. Intense red. Holds well on vine.




CHERRY AND SMALL-FRUITED TYPES

Black Cherry:     Black Cherry 65 days. Indeterminate. This is the first truly black cherry tomato, and an exclusive variety from seed company, Tomato Growers Supply. It is not a plum, but a perfectly round cherry with a classic black tomato flavor, sweet, yet rich and complex. Vigorous tall vines. These cherries are a unique addition to the color spectrum of cherry tomatoes.
Elfin (grape-type):    Elfin
55 days. Determinate. This open-pollinated version of grape tomato has the same wonderful, sweet flavor, size and shape as original grape tomato, but with shorter plants. Elfin's clusters of delicious, uniquely-flavored grape-shaped tomatoes have a sweetness that is unmistakeably "grape".
Gold Nugget:    Gold Nugget
70 days. Indeterminate. Yellow/gold cherry variety. Fruits to 1" or so. Sweet, good flavor. Heavy yields.
Grape:    Grape
56 days. Determinate. This is the original "grape" tomato. Full of flavor with taller, larger plant than Elfin. Bright red, sweet, firm fruit. Very prolific.
Green Grape:    Green Grape
70 days. Determinate. Very short compact plants yield 3/4" - 1" fruit that is yellow-green when ripe and easy to harvest. Full of flavor, sweet and juicy. Prolific variety is sure to be a favorite.
Ildi:     Ildi, Yellow GrapeYellow Grape- 68 days. Indeterminate. Lovely oval yellow cherries are about the size and shape of a large grape with a well balanced flavor that is a delicious combination of sweet and acid. Vigorous plants are quite prolific, producing large bouquets of these yellow, flavorful fruit. Fruit is being sold commercially as Yellow Grape.
Isis Candy:    Isis Candy
70 days. Indeterminate. Very sweet, small cherry style fruit. Does well in hot weather.
Porter's Pride:     Porter's Pride
70 days. Small, very prolific Texas variety. Great for hot, humid summer areas.
Red Pear:    Red Pear
78 days. Indeterminate. Small, to 1", fruit. Red version of yellow pear. Rich flavor. Heavy yields.
Riesenstraube:    Riesenstraube
72 days. Indeterminate. The name of this German heirloom variety means "giant bunch of grapes". Bouquet-type blossoms turn into bunches of 20 - 40 small, oval red fruit with pointed ends. Flavor is excellent. Tastes like a true brandywine. A Herb Cottage favorite!
Yellow Pear:    Yellow Pear
78 days. Indeterminate. Small, to 1" fruit. Old timey variety. Mild flavor. Heavy yields.

Banana, Sweet:    Sweet Banana
70 days. Very dependable, yielding many sweet pointed fruit 6" long , 1-1/2 " wide. Color ranges from pale green >yellow>crimson red. Edible at any stage. Suitable for salads, frying, freezing and relish. Plant grows to about 30".
California Sweet Wonder:    Calif. Sweet Wonder
70 days. Standard sweet, bell pepper. Very reliable. Ripens green>red. Fruit is 4-lobed, 4-5" long. Bush may need staking, to 30".
Chinese Giant Bell:    Chinese Giant
75 days. Old-fashioned bell is huge: 5"-6" deep & wide on compact, bushy plant. Good foliage cover. Ripens to red. Thick walled and meaty.
Corno di Toro:    Corno di Toro
68 days. Italian "bull's horn" colorful sweet pepper 8"-10" long and curved. Ripens to a deep red. Delicious in salads or for grilling.
Cubanelle:     Cubanelle
65 days. Yellow-green, frying type pepper. Six" long fruit is great split and fried in olive oil or sliced into salads.
Giant Aconcagua:    Aconcagua
70 days. A pepper with a flavor as sweet as apples. Oblong fruit grows up to 12" long in great abundance. Delicious in salads, stuffed, stir-fried or roasted and peeled. Can be enjoyed at light green stage, but is sweetest when fully red ripe.
Golden CalWonder:    Golden Cal Wonder
73 days: Same good attributes as California Sweet Wonder, but ripens to a beautiful yellow/orange. Sweet and meaty. Blocky shape about 4" long & wide.
Purple Beauty:    
70 days. Blocky, thick-walled dark purple bell pepper. Compact plants offer good cover for fruit. Beautiful in salads or stuffed.
Sweet Cayenne:    Sweet Cayenne
75 days. Very long, sweet, cayenne shaped peppers will grow to 1 ft. in length and turn crimson red when ripe. Crinkly and thin-walled, these are great for stir-fry or in vinegar. Very ornamental.

Peppers ---- Hot and Hotter Varieties

Ancho 101:    Ancho 101
75-80 days Mildly hot and when green are stuffed and used for Chile Relleno. When mature they are a dusky, dark red, richly flavored and often dried and ground into chile powder. Used for ristras.
Bulgarian Carrot:    Bulgarian Carrot
67 days. Beautiful 3.5" long, bright orange peppers have shape & color of carrot, but are very hot. Abundant fruit on short plant, very showy. Fruity flavor of this cayenne type is perfect for chutneys, salsas and hot pepper jelly. Heirloom Bulgarian variety.
Chiltepin:Chiltepin90 days. Texas native from our farm. Very tiny and hot. Likes some shade for best production. Perfect for vinegars, stir fry or chile
Fish:    Fish
75 days. African-American heirloom. Very striking variegated foliage. The fruit is striped as well. Very hot, 1-2" long peppers used to flavor soups and seafood dishes. Dates back to late 19th century. Beautiful and tasty.
Habanero, Red Savina:    Habanero
90-100 days. Bright red and very hot. Compact bushy plants. Will produce all season. This is the one for hot chile lovers!
Jaloro:    Jaloro
70 days. This is the first yellow Jalapeno developed by the TX Extension Service. Beautiful golden yellow color before turning orange then red. Regular Jalapeno heat with a little fruity flavor. Resistant to many viruses that attack peppers.
Jamaican Hot:    Jamaican Hot
95 days Very hot bright yellow peppers look like little tam o'shanter hats. Also known as squash pepper. Good pickled or fresh.
Pasilla Bajio:     Pasila Baijo
When fresh this pepper is called "chilaca", also known as "chile negro". 8"-10" long fruit is thin-walled ripening from dark green to brown. Not very hot, these are mainly used dried for their rich, smokey flavor.
Serrano:     Serrano
75-80 days. Very hot chile called for in many recipes. About 2-3" long ripens green to red. Suitable for salsa and sauses or fresh eating. Very vigorous bearer.
Tabasco:    Tabasco
80 days This is the one that made "Tabasco Sauce" famous. Very vigorous plant with small fruit ripening from light yellow-green to red. Use at any stage.
TAM Jalapeno:    TAM Jalapeno
75 days. Standard, dark green jalapeno. Good producer, even in the heat. On the mild side for a Jalapeno. Bush can need some support. Grows to 24".


Ornamental Pepper Varieties

Filius Blue:    Filius Blue
90 days. Striking ornamental pepper with tinged leaves that look almost blue and are marked with faint white speckles. Small purple, rounded fruit grow upright on plant and last a long time. Beautiful for landscaping.
New Orleans:    New Orleans
75 days. Very ornamental bush with dark leaves with green and purple colors. Fruit very dark purple, looks black, oval about 3/4" held upright on bush. Protect from very hot afternoon sun.
Poinsettia:    Poinsettia
90 days. The crown of this plant bears clusters of brilliant red peppers arranged like the petals of a poinsettia. Thin, 3" long fruit point upward atop dark green foliage. Very ornamental. Edible and hot. Very good container plant.
Tri Color Variegata:    Tri-Color Variegata
72 days. Variegated foliage in white, green and purple. Purple stems and blooms. Fruits are small turning from green>deep purple>red. Edible, hot. Thought tohave originated in the rain forests of South America.




Eggplant

Apple Green Eggplant:    Apple Green Eggplant
Round green eggplants that are about the size of a baseball. When the fruit matures for seed, the variety actually turns a cream yellow, but is best harvested for kitchen use when the eggplant is a light green in color. Tender and tasty.
Black Beauty:    Black Beauty Eggplant
75 days. Tradional large purple variety. Great for home gardeners and market growers in all regions. As with all eggplants, needs a long growing season.
Little Fingers:70 days. Small, fruit grows in clusters like a hand. Purple skin, tender flesh. Fruit ranges from about 6" long to 3" long in each bunch. Cute and tasty.
Pingtung Long:    Pingtung Long Eggplant
65 days. Named after its town of origin in Taiwan, this slender violet-purple eggplant can grow to 12" and maintain mild flavor and tender white flesh. Thrives and produces during hot and humid weather.
Prosperosa:    Prosperosa Eggplant
75 days. Round deep violet fruit comes from Tuscany originally. Jewel toned purple on the outside with white, mild flesh inside.
Rosa Bianca:    Rosa Bianca Eggplant
75 days. Italian heirloom with creamy, mild flesh and lovely appearance. Light purple skin with white streaks. Round to teardrop shape.
Thai Green Long:    Thai Long Green Eggplant
80 days. Long, green fruit on a sturdy large bush. Very prolific and produces well under hot, dry conditions. Harvest fruit at about 7-8" long for best flavor.
Thai Round Green: Small, to 2", round fruit. Skins are dark green with faint white stripes. Very attractive. Heavy yields.
