The best herbs for creating natural deodorants and how to make them.

The best herbs for natural deodorant

Although there are supermarket shelves of products, that are made to keep you feeling and smelling fresh. Often these come at the cost of the environment. If you are one to always have a sweat on. An herbal deodorant might be perfect for you. A great effective herbal deodorant is something many people are skeptical about, but if you give one a go, I assure you it will speak for itself.

Herbs you can use for natural deodorant

When choosing to make a DIY herbal deodorant, it’s important to know the herbs that work well. Ones that I have found that suit are thyme, turmeric, lavender, sage, rosemary, spearmint, scented geranium and leaves eucalyptus. There are plenty of other great herbs and flowers you can also use, these are just the ones I have tried and used well.

Herbs do wonders for your health, they’re rich in anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour properties. Say for example turmeric, which was (and still is) a popular traditional Chinese medicine to treat digestive disorders. There have also been studies showing the anti-cancer potential of garlic. But for topical application to replace commercial deodorants, two herb ingredients are worth the best acknowledgement.

Lavenders does wonders to the skin. While lavender oils may not be the most coveted product for the skin, it is a natural antibacterial to fight acne and body eczema which makes it a good ingredient for the delicate underarm, Second, we have Sage. While Sage leaf is commonly used as a natural digestive medicine, it is also an effective sweat control remedy. This evergreen subshrub halts the all-out tendencies of our armpits from producing sweat, thanks to its anti-perspirant properties.

Why Make Your Own Deodorant?

Natural ingredients give us the ease of toxin-free by-products especially with herbs that have proven health benefits. While commercial deodorants have quite the list of commas for artificial ingredients, natural deodorants made from herbs only count a few items and all of it are natural and might even be in your own home garden.

A great benefit of a DIY deodorant, or even buying a local naturally made equivalent, is that you know what ingredients have gone into the product and you can make it free of toxic ingredients and completely natural. Although you are not eating the stuff, and some may wonder how these chemicals get in your body. Your skin is great at absorbing chemicals that are left on it. Hence why if we spill cleaning products on our skin, we are quick to wash it off. Whilst not every deodorant has ingredients in it that are harmful, many do contain aluminium, which works well and stops sweating, however for your health is not recommenced.

What goes into homemade deodorant

There are many different ways to make homemade deodorant. The most common beginner one is also the first one I had a go at making. It did actually turn out well but on hot days the whole thing would turn into a liquid, causing the solids to sink. After that I got more into distilling the herbal smell into another liquid, such as coconut oil, therefore working in any conditions.

Now it’s time to get started.

Here’s a simple recipe that you can use to get started on your first DIY deodorant.

Herbal Deodorant/fragrance Recipe:

  • Place three tablespoons of dried herb or six tablespoons of dried flower petals in a ceramic bowl. If it is more convenient to use fresh herbs and flowers, double the quantity.
  • Mix together 300 millilitres each of apple cider vinegar and distilled water and, in an enamel or stainless-steel saucepan, heat to just below boiling point.
  • Pour the liquid over the herbs, cover with plastic wrap and leave for 24 hours for it all to infuse.
  • When the time is up, you can strain the water. If the fragrance is still too strong, you can dilute 50/50 with distilled water.
  • Store in a bottle with a tight-fitting lid, and after washing and drying under arms, dab on the vinegar and allow to dry.

Once you have given this a go, you will be hooked. Using a deodorant, you have made yourself is also extremely satisfying, and something I would recommend we all try. Also making your own natural deodorant allows you the opportunity to experiment with inputs until you have an end result that you are happy with. Regarding the environment, making things naturally is always a massive plus and a great way to contribute to sustainability.
